Adapting our Halloween teaching, to follow COVID19 protocols, in our flipped classroom

Schools ,all over the World, have made many changes to keep students and teachers safe during the school year, and class Halloween celebrations have seen changes too.

All teachers, have to follow social distancing and other COVID protocols, every day.

Halloween was very different , in my classes, this year,as well.

With social distancing in place , many of the games and activities we love doing at Halloween were simply not possible this year.

As such, it has been quite difficult for me as a teacher ,to come up with fun Halloween games to do while safely social distancing.

Keep Your Distance

Ηere’s my list of fun social distancing Halloween games and activities that our students can safely do while keeping their distance from others. They worked in my class. I do hope, they will work in yours, as well.

What is it about Halloween that I love so much ? It’s its  FUN element, I guess!

Therefore, I decided to try and bring some Halloween spirit to my class this weird year.

I attempted to teach my students Halloween themed lessons, and to  elicit some  excitement from them, following the protocols. I feel that we, at least, paid Halloween  a pretty good tribute, against all odds.

A few of my favourite non-contact Halloween active games and activities

The first day I started thinking about how to teach about Halloween safely, for both my students and me, I ran into this highly inspiring English Teacher’s video, on Facebook! I decided to give it a try and see if it worked with my very young learners ! Guess what: it did!! We just loved it!

Highly recommended to all English Teachers! And, please, follow this amazing teacher! She is one of a kind, trust me!

Make A Spooky Puppet Theatre

If you’re looking for a spooky activity to do with your students this 🎃Halloween🎃Here’s an idea…Make your own Mini Puppet Theatre (out of a cereal box) and sing-along with 6 monster stick puppets. Watch the video to know more!

https://www.facebook.com/KidsEnglishTheatre/videos/2756291474687434

Another great game I ran into and decided to use in my classes ,both synchronously and asynchronously, is this one, below. I found even more social distancing teaching ideas for Halloween party games to try with my classes, in this amazing site.

Draw A Monster Game

That was a great game to play at Halloween while social distancing. In that game, the kids drew a monster.

To play, I asked each student to grab a piece of paper and something to draw with and then played the video. In the video, the students read a description of a monster. After reading the description, they tried to draw what they thought the monster looked like based on that description.

Once students finished their drawing, I/they played the video to see what the monster looked like.

My students, really loved this kind of activity, especially when their monster drawings looked very similar to the monster in the video. I asked them to work on this video at home, using our asynchronous e-me hive platform but you can follow the same steps, in a school class.

This activity can be easily done at Halloween while social distancing as the students can stay in their seats while they draw their monster, and do not need to be close to or share resources with others.

Halloween Bingo

Halloween Bingo

This next social distancing Halloween game is a Halloween themed BINGO game.

To play, the students were asked to create a Halloween vocabulary Bingo card, in their notebooks, using any 9 Halloween vocabualry words/pictures they wished.

Next, I called out one of the Halloween words, in our vocabulary list, for example ‘ghost’. Then, the students should check their bingo card. If the ghost word/picture is on their card, then they had to cross that Halloween word/picture out.

Then, I called out another Halloween word and again students should check if that word was in their card and if it was, they should cross it out, again. The first student who crossed out all their Halloween words/pictures, was the winner.

Halloween Costume Fashion Show

This social distancing Halloween activity idea is a great way to let kids strut their stuff and show off their fun and scary Halloween costumes.

I always set up an area to be your ‘Halloween catwalk’ and then invite students one by one to walk down the catwalk and show off their great Halloween costumes.

This year, I did that with my 4th graders ,after I had sent them a Halloween vocabulary quizlet and these two relevant songs/videos, in our asynchronous class, first!

I also asked them to visit this , as well as that Thinglink walls , before they decided about what to dress up ,in our school classroom.

To make it feel even more like a fashion show, I snapped some pictures of them in their costumes and shared them with the students’ parents, in our asynchronous class!

Halloween Word Search

Halloween Word search

I am sure that we all have used word search worksheets ,to get our kids familiar with some Halloween vocabulary. But this online Halloween activity also has the added benefit of being perfectly safe to do while keeping a safe distance from others.

Click to download this Halloween word search or see all our Halloween worksheets.

Another cool web tool , which I personally used to create my own word search activities was Liveworksheets. A free teaching web tool, you will love!

Halloween Charades Game

With a little preparation, this classic party game can be turned into a safe social distancing Halloween game.

If you’re not familiar with charades, in this game one person would choose a card -or to make sure this Halloween game can be played while safely social distancing, the teacher shows him/her a card- and then try to act out what is on the card without using any words or sounds.

To make it into a Halloween game, I simply used cards with Halloween related things on them. For example,I wrote/drew Halloween words (ghost, witch, broomstick, etc), Halloween songs (The Monster Mash, etc) or Halloween Movies (Night of The Living Dead, etc). It’s diffrent ,for each different age/level we teach.

I ensured the student acting out the word and the students guessing the word were all at a safe distance.

HALLOWEEN QUIZZES

Usually, these quizzes would be played in pairs or small teams, but seen as that is not possible while social distancing, these quizzes can be played individually, both at home asynchronously ,or in class, using a projector and working in teams.

You can download this pre-made Top Five Quiz with ten questions.

I personally create my own quizzes, such as this one, on a favourite web tool which is similar to Kahoot, called Quizziz.

Students, love it!

Hot Seat

I thought that, this classic classroom game could be easily adapted so my students could play while social distancing.

This time, I decided to use my Halloween flashcards, to play this game.

I asked one student to come to front of the class and stand / sit at a safe distance from other students. Then standing behind the student I showed the rest of the class a flashcard.

Next, the students tried to describe the word on the flashcard without saying the word, and the student at the front of the class should guess what it was. Super fun!

We played apple bobbing and dangling donuts

  1. Apple bobbing – I gave each student their own apple in their own bowl of water, or asked them to hold their own apple tied onto a string and challenged them to take a bite without touching it.I made it a race and gave the winner a prize.
  2. Dangling donuts – Each student held their own donut tied onto a string. They took it in turns to dangle a donut for each other. The challenge was to eat it with no hands, as fast as possible.

Detail 1: there was spooky music playing ,in the background!

Detail 2: My students ,had to watch a couple of videos similar to this one, in our asynchronous class, when at home, before they attended our school class.

Let’s decorate our classroom

You can check out these Halloween craft activities and decoration ideas or print and colour these free Halloween posters to add a spooky message for passers-by.

In our asynchronous “e-me hive“, my students had the chance to watch several videos, such as this one, or this one, follow the directions there and make their favourite crafts and decorations to bring back to class, the following day.

I decided to ask my amazing 4th graders to watch a video with instructions about how to make paper ghosts using their footprints, at home, and make them ,either themselves or with their parents’ help. Then, they were asked to write about them and decorate their classroom bulletin board with them, after they had presented them in class, of course! Cute!

Let’s make spooky food

What better time to indulge in some jaw-droppingly tasty sweets, than Halloween time?

First, I posted a few delicious Halloween treats ideas, to our asynchronous class and asked my students to watch and prepare their favourite treats, bring them to school and share them, in our Halloween party ! Yummy!

A pumpkin carving contest

I suggest that you treat everyone in the class to their very own pumpkin and see who can come up with the best design. Ι have come to the conclusion that a safe way to get little kids involved is to post a video with instructions in an asynchronous teaching platform and tell them to ask their parents to do the cutting for them, first. Then let them scoop out the insides with a spoon. This how to carve a pumpkin beginners’ guide is a great place to start. This is where we started, in our school classroom.

Another nice video, which I posted in our asynchronous hive, to help my older students curve their pumpkins at home, was this one. For my younger learners, I used this video.

I hope, you will like them as much as we did!

Have a ‘scary’ movie night, at home-or a scary movie…. day, at school

At first, I told them that, during Halloween nights, the people who celebrate it take some tasty Halloween treats and wear their Halloween costumes or  some cool Halloween PJs like these glow-in-the-dark skeleton ones.

Then, I asked them to watch the short film extracts ,which I had created, using one of my most favourite web teaching tools: edpuzzle, asynchronously, together with their families.

Here’s one example of such film extract ,which my youngest students, liked a lot: E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial .

I even offered them a choice of several other Halloween themed movies, to watch at home, using Quizlet.

Family Halloween movies

Make a spooky music playlist

From Michael Jackson’s Thriller to the Ghostbusters theme tune, I decided to have lots of class fun compiling a spooky playlist to listen to, together with my students. I thought it was safe, to post the lyrics to our asynchronous class first and later, with the use of a projector, have a Halloween karaoke competition, in the school classroom ! It was so much fun! Although, it didn’t last long ,since our teaching hours last only about 40 minutes ! My students were given the opportunity to sing the songs again and again, at home, too, thanks, to our asynchronous class platform posts.

For my very young learners, I did the very same thing , using their favourite Halloween songs, such as this one , this one or even this one!

We all danced and sang happily- in safe distances, of course!

Story Reports

You don’t have to read a book on the page to write a story report. This Halloween, instead of having my students listen to an audiobook or story, I decided to have my wicked witch puppet, Amelia present herself to the class!

It was an active listening activity, using puppetry! I asked them to keep notes, while listening.

Then I had them write a story report based on what they heard, or give a summary of the story to our asynchronous class, in a padlet presentation.

Happy Halloween teaching!

ABC and word games, on Halloween!

dscn9690
Lately, we have been enjoying lots of fun Alphabet activities. Apples, leaves and pumpkins all lend themselves perfectly to letter learning activities, so we are embracing that and having tons of fun!
Here are my favorite ways to practice letter identification, uppercase and lowercase letter matching, letter sounds , word recognition and more!
Halloween Cup hunt
  1. Write the letter of the Alphabet on the white sticker or directly onto the cups.
  2. Model how to play in whole group or small group setting.
  3. Have the children close their eyes.
  4. Place the eyeball/Halloween treat under one of the cups.
  5. Chant, “Eye Spy, I Spy.”
  6. Children open their eyes.
  7. Call on students one at a time to guess which cup is hiding the eyeball.
  8. Students read letter of the cup where they think the eyeball/treat  is.
  9. Students lift the cup to see if they are right
  10. Game continues until the eyeball/treat is found.
  11. Repeat game again.
  12. They can keep  the treat, only if they manage to say a word which starts with it as soon as they find it!

dscn9639

dscn9641

dscn9652

All in all…These cups take up less room and work great for letters, words, and numbers too. The students  can:

  • Say the letter.
  • Say the sound.
  • Name something that begins with the letter.
  • Put the cups in ABC order first.

mosa15halloweennew12
The Pumpkin letter memory game

Alphabet Memory Game on…pumpkin templates!

dscn9684

  1. Put the pumpkin  picture cards aside. Mix up all of the uppercase and lowercase cards.
  2. Place them face down on the table or floor in a grid-like pattern.
  3. Have a student choose two pumpkin cards anywhere on the grid.
  4. Are the letters a match? Big A with little a? If so, that student  gets to remove those cards from play and keep them for his/her team . He also gets to go again!
  5. If they don’t match, turn them back over, and the next person/team  goes. Even if the cards don’t match, encourage your students  to remember where those cards are in case they need to find them again!
  6. Keep playing until all of the cards have been matched. The team with the most matches wins the game.

dscn9683

dscn9682

Game 2: Letter Sounds Memory Game with Halloween vocabulary!

This game is played the same way except you use one set of alphabet cards and the Halloween picture cards. Try to make a match by finding the picture’s beginning letter!

Set a timer for a few minutes and see how many matches he can get.

dscn9675
 The Alphabet Monster
I spread the letters/pictures  on a desk and tell my students  that the monster was VERY hungry and only eats letters/pictures … BUT that he can only eat them if you say the letter’s/picture’s name first.  They quickly pick out the letters that they already know and feed them to the monster saying each letter name as she put them in.  To make the game fun and playful, I make sounds for the monster … like, “Ohhhh, I’m so hungry!” and gobbling noises after they put a letter in the box.  This receives lots of giggles and silly smiles!
dscn6267-768x1024

Although we are using the box for alphabet identification, he can EASILY be changed into a number or color monster!

Variation:

A nice Halloween ABC variation that my students love, has to do with a….Monster!!

dscn8818

I was inspired to create this last year reading an interesting  blog post and I thought I’d share it if anyone would like to use it. I just print a copy for each team . Then I laminate it and tape it onto a fly swatter with the middle part cut out. It can work as a letter monster, a word monster, or even a number monster. I also found a cute little rhyme to go with it.

DSCN6012 (1024x768)

Halloween words- Ladders to the MOON!

This is a simple game.  First, I use tape to create the ladder or just draw it on the board .  Then, I write down high Halloween words or put up flash cards with letters and sounds .  The goal is to move all the way up the ladder.  If you get the word/letter/sound  right, you advance to the next rung.  If you get it wrong, you fall all the way back to the bottom.  Of course, it can work for kids on all levels and subjects.  It can be used for vocabulary, reading, ….math facts – the possibilities are endless.

I have written about our class Halloween activities in a couple of older posts, too. Today, I wish to share some favourite Halloween links  with amazing Halloween ESL activities !

Why I like Halloween ESL lessons so much??

Halloween lessons evoke the spirit of the holiday. Whether we  teach in an English-speaking country or not, Halloween is a perfect period to have fun while providing learning opportunities for our students.

Halloween lessons are a marvelous way to bridge a few cultural gaps. Most likely, our  students have had some type of exposure to Halloween—whether through movies, cartoons or the internet. This is your opportunity to fill any gaps and share a bit of another culture with our students.

Holiday-themed lessons play a vital role in switching up the hum-drum of a normal day’s routine. Holidays offer excellent opportunities for our students to learn new cultural themes and new vocabulary  all while having fun.

Halloween fun!!!

mos14hween10

What is it about Halloween that I love so much ? It’s its  FUN element, I guess….

I decided to try and bring some Halloween spirit to my class  this year, too. I attempted to teach my  students Halloween themed lessons, and to  elicit some  excitement from them. I feel that I at least paid Halloween  a pretty good tribute.

mos14hween6sos

Some games and ideas were ones that I created and some came from my colleagues or the Internet.

Here are only  FEW  of my favourites.

mos14hween7

The Donut Game

My students love this game – The day of the class party, they buy a  donut .

I divide the students into pairs  and give each pair a 3-4 foot long piece of strong string/butcher cord. Two pairs of students compete against each other.

While a student holds each end of the string, the other  student places a donut through the string and with hands behind his/her back, tries to take a bite of it, as the other student slides the donut from one end to the other by moving the string gently.

mos14hween8

I make sure that the student doesn’t get too frustrated.

There is always spooky music during the game and when a music piece  is over, time is up and we decide which student has eaten most of his/her donut!  The winners are awarded Halloween stickers and the game continues. TONS OF FUN!

DSCN8413

Halloween Spell Book

mos14hall11

This is an amazing Activityvillage idea, which we finally turn into a class competition for the best spell! Put together your own book of common spells with this Activityvillage  fun Halloween printable!

mos14hween5n

Print the cover onto coloured printer card or colour it in yourself. Then print as many pages as you like and fill them in with lots of gruesome and interesting details.

DSCN8438

The Pumpkin Patch chant

mos14hall6

Setting: Small or Large Group
Objective: Oral Language development, name recognition
Materials: one pumpkin die-cut per child, Sharpie marker
Directions: Write the each student’s name on a pumpkin with a Sharpie. Sit the students in a circle in your large group area and place all the pumpkins in the middle of the circle on the floor face down. Have each student take a turn coming to the middle and turning over a pumpkin and reading the name. The entire class says the following rhyme:

Who took the pumpkin from the pumpkin patch??

Who took the pumpkin from the pumpkin patch??

“Who took the pumpkin from the pumpkin patch?
________ (insert name of student whose name appears on the pumpkin die-cut) took the pumpkin from the pumpkin patch.”
Student whose name appears on the pumpkin says: “Who me?”
Teacher and class= “Yes, you”
Student= “Couldn’t be”
Teacher and class= “Then who?”

I repeat the activity by having the student whose name was on the pumpkin turn another one over. I continue until all students have had a turn.

mos14hallow4

Bobbing for apples

An old-time-classic Halloween game! I put  lots of apples in a bowl of water and thenstudents  try to get them out! But, no hands!!You could make this traditional game a little more scary by filling the bobbing tub with milk and adding red food colouring. Add enough colouring until the milk resembles bright red blood….You could also use a large plastic “cauldron” rather than a bucket or tub.

DSCN8404

What’s missing?

mos14hall13

Very useful to teach and practice Halloween vocabulary! I stick Halloween word cards on the board and ask two students each time, representing two teams, to close their eyes or turn their back to the board.Meanwhile, I remove a card from the board and ask: ” What’s missing”?

mos14hweennewgameThe first student to find out and name the card missing, wins a point for his/her team! Fun!

DSCN8441

Foot Ghost

I ask the kids to trace their foot  on white craft foam or paper . They cut foot pattern out of it. If they wish, they trace and cut a hand pattern and glue the hands on the back of the ghost . They can also draw a face and glue wiggly eyes , on the heel of the foot. They can use ribbon or other materials to decorate their  ghost.I later ask them to write simple sentences on the ghost  and finally put all ghosts on the classroom walls. Cute!

mos14hallblog2

Halloween Spooky Tree
I build a spooky tree decoration using black and purple card, which I put up on the classroom walls.

mos14hallblog4

I ask my kids to use web,  spiders,  little ghosts and  halloween words pictures  to decorate our tree. A great way to review Halloween vocabulary and decorate the class at the same time!

Pin the wart on the Witch’s nose

mos14hallblog

I draw a big picture of a Witch.I get lumps of green play dough, blidfold each child and let them put the wart on the Witch’s nose! Variations I have also tried: Pin the nose on Jack ‘O Lantern, Pin the tail on the black cat.

Wrap the mummy

mos14hween

I use loo rolls for this hilarious activity! I have the children work in teams and see who can wrap up their friend the fastest! Spooky background music, necessary!

mos14hweennew

We love it in my class when we take a vote on the best and scariest costumes. The kids actually decide what dress-up clothes or accessories to put on , on the spot! Sometimes, imagination works miracles!I always make sure that  I hand out some..spooky prize for the best costumes!

mos14hween13

Horrible Halloween Recipes

mos14hweennew4

I always give students a handout with Halloween party recipes and ask them to go home and try some of them and bring them back to class for their classmates to taste! This year, I asked them to try the “red/green  slime dessert” .They had to make an either green or red jelly, break it up with a fork, add some gummy worms etc in it , to make a slimy dessert. Yummy!?

Halloween cartoons and videos time

I always have my classes watch Halloween videos and comment on them! This year, I had them watch a video about how to carve a pumpkin, a Disney Halloween cartoon story and some easy and fun Halloween songs for very young learners on youtube! There is such a large collection on line of all of the above therefore, I won’t suggest anything here…

Classroom party games are great for team building and student motivation in the classroom!!

DSCN8412

Don’t try to play all these games at the same party. You won’t have time and you’ll be rushing through them. Keep something new for the next Halloween  school year party.

mos14hween12

The main thing is to have fun and enjoy your students!!

Halloween games, craft and activities, in my class.

bloghallspell3

A magic spell juice, we even tasted !

Halloween is time for great fun in my class!!

Among other things , we play lots of games during our Halloween party! I suggest that you try some of them, too…Part of teaching english  or any other language , is teaching customs and traditions, a different way of life !

mos14hween6sos

Well, here’s a short list of what I have tried over the years and has worked, in  all different levels:

bloghallmasks

Costumes

To make a ghost ,take an old white sheet and cut two holes for the eyes…to make an easy Halloween costume use a black bin bag.You can cut wings to make a bat or a vampire!

Let your students improvise on the main idea and come up with their own costumes that very day, too. You’ll be surprised by  the outcome!

The “Best Halloween costume contest”  can follow ,on an imaginary …”catwalk”!

bloghallloween FUN

Games

Ask them to bring a pumpkin lantern to the party!

bloghallpumpkin The volunteers who decide to do so, are always awarded a ‘scratch and sniff” sticker of  a Halloween theme! Children can do anything, just to have that precious sticker, trust me!!

Bobbing for apples:Put a lot of apples in a bowl with water and then ask them to get them out ,  no hands!

mos14hallow4

Bobbing for doughnuts: Hang some doughnuts up on string in front of the students faces .the first one who eats the doughnut, no hands, is the winner!I usually play backgroud spooky music during this game!

bloghallbobbing

Circle ghost story: Sit in a circle on the floor.I  start a scary ghost story. The next person continues…and then the next student….until we get a scary end!

Pin the nose on the pumpkin: a variation of ” pin the tail on the donkey ” for very young learners!

bloghallnose

Or “Pin the wart on the witch’s nose”!

bloghallwitch

Challege the class to come up with 20 Halloween related words in five minutes, working in teams or ask them to unjumble jumbled Halloween words!

bloghallwords

Trick or Treat game-my favourite!

bloghalltrick

Going “Trick-or-treat ” around the school!

I offer them candies and lollipops and ask them to have as many as they wish!!!

mos14hween5n

Then – surprise!!-they are asked to write for homework ,as many sentences related to Halloween ,as the number of sweets they have in their hands! Tricky!!bloghalltreats

Wrap the mummy:

mos14hween2

Using toilet paper,  pairs of students representing their teams, try to wrap their mummy first, top to toe! The first pair to finish , win  Halloween stickers for their team! Really funny!!

bloghallwitch2

Wiggly worms game : We need, spaghetti, grapes, cooking oil and wrapped sweets. This is something I bring in class…students have no idea, it’s a surprise!

bloghallspell2

Cook the spaghetti!Add cooking oil to make it slimy.Put a black plastic bag in  a bin or a carton box.

Add the spaghetti and grapes.

Add the sweets and mix.

Make a cover for the bin.

Make a hole in the cover big enough for a hand.

Let your students find the sweets in the squishy worms for Trick or Treat!

Crafts

Foot ghost:I ask my students to trace their foot on a piece of paper.Draw a face on it , and write Halloween facts or words ( depends on the level) on  it.Hang them in the classroom!

bloghallfoot

bloghallghost2

Halloween spooky tree: Build a spooky tree decoration either on the walls using card or in a bucket using plaster! Use little ghosts, or other Halloween images to decorate it!Good for teaching or revising Halloween vocabulary while decorating the tree as a class!

Food

Dead man’s fingers sandwiches: Cut some bread in slices.spread on some margarine and cream cheese.roll up the sandwiches and cut them in sticks. Stick an almond in each finger to make a nail!Add some tomato ketchup to make the blood!

bloghallfoodfingers

Green slime dessert:Make a green or red  jelly.Break it up with a fork and add some gummy worms to make a slimy dessert!

bloghallfood

Toffee apples: I give the students the recipe first. They make the caramel, dip the apples in it with a stick and leave them to cool! Bring them  in class to share with their classmates! Reading comprehension, plus fun!

Halloween Rhymes:

I saw a ghost (Fingers circle eyes)

He saw me too( Point to yourself)

I waved at him( wave your hand)

But, he said “Boo”!

Halloween magic spell competition
